Our engraving is created using an annealing process that permanently laser etches the design approximately 0.5mm into the steel, leaving a subtle indentation rather than simply marking the surface. The black appearance is created by the intense heat of the laser interacting with the steel during the slow engraving, leaving a dark, soot-like burn within the engraved area.
Everyday wear, friction, skin chemistry, sweat, lotions, soaps, chlorine, water exposure, and contact with clothing or other surfaces can gradually alter the darkness of the burn. While this black coloration can naturally lighten or fade over time, the engraving itself is permanent. Even if the black burn coloration fades completely, the actual engraving remains physically etched into the steel and is still visible and readable.
Because every person wears and cares for their jewelry differently, the rate of this natural aging can vary significantly. Some may notice the black coloration gradually lighten over time, while others may experience little to no fading at all. Changes or fading of the black coloration are considered normal wear and do not mean the engraving itself is fading or disappearing.
